What is SPCRR Anyway??
The Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources (SPCRR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to acquiring and restoring railroad car constructed by Carter Brothers in Newark, California, around the turn of the century.
The Society currently has ten such narrow gauge cars; two completely restored flatcars -- one which operated on the South Pacific Coast -- and one which operated on the Northshore; four boxcars, combine 1010, a horsecar, a home-built ballast car, and ex-SPCRR No. 47. Cars are restored to their original condition using the original techniques.
The cars are operated on narrow gauge track constructed by the group at the Ardenwood Historic Farm, a 200-acre working farm in Fremont/Newark. Operating practices follow the South Pacific Coast Railroad as a prototype; motive power is one of the group's two large draft horses.
